A Reminder to ALL Readers . . .

Welcome to the Speaker of the House blogsite. This blogsite promotes the respectful recognition of the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives of the United States of America! Our respect begins with praying for God's blessing of protection, direction and favor upon the Speaker of the House position, and specifically upon the life and family of Nancy Pelosi as the first woman Speaker of the House of Representatives. God is is neither Democrat nor Republican. The way to live has been set forth by the challenging words of Jesus Christ many years ago: "But seek ye first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these other things will be taken care of" (this phrase paraphrased) (Matthew 6:33). May all pray for Nancy Pelosi . . .

Even haters can't help but admit that . . .

Even haters can't help but admit that Speaker Pelosi and House Democrats are getting things done. The NY Times calls the first 100 hours "a qualified success."

A quick read of the article reveals the "qualified" related to just one thing, the pay-as-you-go rules. But on the whole, the article is pretty much exuberantly hopeful.

The following bills have passed the House, and will now go to the Senate and the White House on the path to becoming law:

* Ethics reform,

* An increase in the federal minimum wage for the first time in 10 years,

* Enactment of the 9-11 commission's recommendations,

* Expanded stem-cell research,

* Government negotiation of prices with prescription drug companies,

* Student loan interest rates cut in half,

* The elimination of billions in subsidies for big oil companies. READ More & "pray the news"

Nancy Pelosi: Woman about the House

Raising five children could be the perfect training for the first female Speaker in the US Congress

By Andrew Gumbel

Published: 07 January 2007

Nancy Pelosi hasn't merely ascended to the speakership of the House of the Representatives. The California Democrat, who laboured in relative obscurity as a jobbing committee member and party manager until emerging victorious from November's mid-term elections, has turned the moment into a full-blown celebration.

And there is much to celebrate: the Democratic Party's takeover of Congress after 12 years of Republican dominance, the crowning of her own personal ambitions and, above all, the historic significance of having a woman in the Speaker's chair - and also a woman third in line to the presidency - for the first time. Pelosi And Reid Are Unknown ??

(CBS) As the 110th Congress gets underway, the new Democratic leaders of both the House of Representatives and the Senate remain unfamiliar to most Americans, according to a new CBS News poll.

More than seven in 10 Americans are undecided or haven’t heard enough about Nancy Pelosi, a Democrat and the first woman Speaker of the House, to have an opinion of her. Those who do have an opinion are divided: 14 percent of Americans view her favorably, while 12 percent view her unfavorably.

As expected, Democrats are more likely than Republicans to view Pelosi favorably. 24 percent of Democrats have a favorable opinion of the Speaker, while 30 percent of Republicans hold a negative view of her.

The new Senate Majority Leader, Harry Reid, is even more unknown to the public than Speaker Pelosi. 86 percent of Americans are undecided or haven’t heard enough about Reid. Among those with an opinion, 5 percent have a favorable one, while 8 percent hold an unfavorable view. Republicans are more likely than Democrats to view Majority Leader Reid unfavorably.

This poll was conducted among a random sample of 993 adults nationwide, interviewed by telephone January 1-3, 2007. The error due to sampling for results based on the entire sample could be plus or minus three percentage points. The error for subgroups is higher.

After 12 Years "We're back!"

Democrats Take Over - CNSNews.com

Twelve years of Republican congressional control ended at noon Thursday when the election of new members ushered in an era of Democratic rule - beginning with a fortnight of action on an agenda ranging from raising the minimum wage to expanding funding for embryonic stem cell experimentation.

• As humans, we can never be totally sure of the future; only God knows our path. We must never be frightened of things that God allows to happen for His purposes and His Glory! We must always remember to turn to Him for everything! • "Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand." (Ephesians 6: 13 NKJV)

Pelosi 'Muzzling Free Speech,' Conservatives Warn - CNSNews.com

Tyranny! Social conservatives are crying on Thursday, as "San Francisco radical" Nancy Pelosi becomes speaker of the House. The Traditional Values Coalition (TVC) warned that Pelosi is crafting an aggressive plan to "muzzle" conservative groups through lobby reform.

According to Rev. Louis Sheldon, TVC chairman, Pelosi plans to attack the First Amendment right of conservative groups to freely lobby Members of Congress. Her plan is part of the Democrats' "lobby reform" legislation that she hopes to push through Congress. "Rep. Pelosi, a pro- abortion, pro-homosexual, anti-military legislator, is working with the leftist Public Citizen group to craft a bill that specifically targets conservative groups -- but leaves labor unions, corporations, and even foreign interests to freely lobby Congress," Sheldon said in a message to supporters. "The legislation will be a serious violation of the Constitution by undermining free speech and placing incredible time and financial burdens on grassroots organizations. This will infringe upon the right of the people to petition their government," he warned.

• May we seek wisdom in all we do! Pray for Speaker Pelosi that she will inquire of the Lord on how to lead the U.S. House of Representatives. • "When wisdom enters your heart, and knowledge is pleasant to your soul, discretion will preserve you; understanding will keep you, to deliver you from the way of evil, from the man who speaks perverse things, from those who leave the paths of uprightness to walk in the ways of darkness; who rejoice in doing evil, and delight in the perversity of the wicked." (Proverbs 2: 10-14 NKJV)

House Speaker Pelosi returns to her roots

By S.A. Miller
THE WASHINGTON TIMES

BALTIMORE -- House Speaker Nancy Pelosi returned triumphantly to this Little Italy neighborhood yesterday to see the street she grew up on renamed in her honor.
"Every step that I took to the speakership began in this neighborhood," said an unusually effervescent Mrs. Pelosi, a California Democrat who this week became the first female House speaker and the United States' highest ranking woman in elected office.
"The women in this community were very strong," she said.
More than 300 people -- many of them Italian-Americans waving miniature American flags -- gathered on the neighborhood's narrow streets to see the block where Mrs. Pelosi, herself an Italian-American, spent her youth. Mrs. Pelosi grew up near Albemarle and Fawn streets.
"It's once in a lifetime to know someone is a former neighbor to be speaker of the House," said lifelong Little Italy resident Anna Brotto, 71. "It's a great thing, no?"
Mrs. Pelosi, 66, learned politics at the knee of her father, Thomas D'Alesandro Jr., a Democrat with more than 20 straight terms in elected office, including jobs as Baltimore mayor and U.S. congressman.
Her brother, Thomas D'Alesandro III, who also served as mayor of Baltimore and remains a fixture in Little Italy, presided over the unveiling of the ceremonial street sign that read: "Via Nancy D'Alesandro Pelosi."
The ceremonial sign was colored blue to differentiate it from the city's official green street signs.
The event attracted a who's-who of Maryland Democratic politics, including House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer, Rep. Christopher Van Hollen Jr., Sens. Barbara A. Mikulski and Benjamin L. Cardin, former Sen. Paul S. Sarbanes and former Attorney General J. Joseph Curran Jr.
Democratic Baltimore officials on hand included City Council members Stephanie Rawlings Blake, Mary Pat Clarke, Helen Holton, Keiffer Jackson Mitchell and Mayor-designate Sheila Dixon, who will inherit the office when Maryland Gov.-elect Martin O'Malley takes office Jan. 17.
Mrs. Pelosi could not resist a nod to Mrs. Dixon.
"Mayor Dixon," she said, "it is a thrill to hear we are going to have a mayor who is a woman."
Repeatedly, the remarks at the ceremony returned to stories of the legendary D'Alesandro family.
Mr. D'Alesandro recalled how their childhood home in a corner row house had been a constant hub of altruistic political deal-making and favor-brokering.
"I see in Nancy the culmination of all that work," he said.
Mrs. Pelosi told the crowd that her parents' devout Catholicism was a stronger influence than their politicking.
"My parents did not raise me to be speaker of the House," she said. "They raised me to be holy. They raised me to do the right thing. ... They were on the side of the angels."
Mr. O'Malley, who currently is serving his second term as mayor of Baltimore and organized the street-naming event, also evoked Mrs. Pelosi's famous parents and her humble beginning "right here in the basement of this row house."
"It's right here in this neighborhood that she first heard the call to public service and it was her parents calling her to public service," he said.
The street naming was part of three days of festivities to mark Mrs. Pelosi's historic ascent to the speaker's post. Earlier yesterday, she laid flowers at a statue of her father in Baltimore.
Previously she dined as a special guest at the Italian Embassy; hosted a "swearing-in celebration concert" in the Great Hall of the National Building Museum; and held an "open house for the People's House," in keeping with the Democrats' professed allegiance with the common man.

The First 100 Hours: A Summary

This summary of the eight key points in the first hours of the new 110th Congress is an excerpt of the most recent Legislative Update, which was published on Dec. 28, 2006.

Please find below the names of each issue, and the prayer points and verses we wish to pray over each one.

1. Congressional Operations

a. Lobbying Reform is described as "the First Order of Business" in the new Congress.

-- Pray lobbying reform passes.
-- Pray the provisions regarding grassroots lobbying are not included.
They have all turned aside; together they have become corrupt; There is no one who does good, not even one (Psalm 14:3,53:3; Romans 3:12).

b. "Pay-as-you-go" -- This is not a proposed law. This is a rule Congress intends to impose on itself to restrain how it spends money. Originally part of the Budget Enforcement Act of 1990, pay-as-you- go budget enforcement rules intend to halt deficit growth by not allowing any new tax cuts without spending cuts, nor new spending increases without tax increases.

-- Praise the Lord for this restoration of fiscal restraint by our leaders.
Rulers are not a cause of fear for good behavior, but for evil (Romans 13:3).

2. 9/11 Commission Recommendations -- Committee Structure

Under the new Democratic Leadership, Congress is already declaring it will implement the 9/11 Commission recommendations for everyone except itself. From The Washington Post:

Democrats Reject Key 9/11 Panel Suggestion
"It was a solemn pledge, repeated by Democratic leaders and candidates over and over: If elected to the majority in Congress, Democrats would implement all of the recommendations of the bipartisan commission that examined the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001."

-- Pray for wisdom for our leaders as they seek to fend off those who wish to destroy our freedom. • And they will live in it securely; and they will build houses, plant vineyards, and live securely, when I execute judgments upon all who scorn them round about them. Then they will know that I am the Lord their God (Ezekiel 28:26).

3. Minimum Wage - Laws in the States

-- Pray for justice for the laborers in this country and those around world.
-- Pray that a raise in the minimum wage does not discourage teenagers from finishing high school.
-- Pray for a separate minimum wage for students under 18 that, perhaps, creates an incentive to stay in school.
The laborer is worthy of his wages (Luke 10:7, 1 Timothy 5:18).

4. Health Care - Medicare Part D (Negotiating Lower Drug Prices) and Health Savings Accounts

-- Pray that in all the discussions around health care in this country, that the end result would be that individuals would retain their liberty in decision- making about healing.
Behold, I will bring to it health and healing, and I will heal them; and I will reveal to them an abundance of peace and truth (Jeremiah 33:6).

5. Embryonic Stem Cell Research

We covered this issue extensively last Summer before and after President Bush cast his only veto ever (thus far) against a bill that would have shifted money away from fruitful research on mature adult stem cells and to fruitless research on immature embryonic stem cells. Please refer to those updates for extensive information on this issue.

-- Pray that Congress would vigorously fund fruitful adult stem cell research.
-- Pray that Congress would not fund life-taking embryonic stem cell research.
-- Pray that if Congress funds embryonic stem cell research that President Bush would veto it.
-- Pray that if President Bush vetoes funding for embryonic stem cell research, that there would not be enough votes in the House, nor in the Senate to override his veto.

[Hezekiah] removed the high places and broke down the sacred pillars and cut down the Asherah (2 Kings 18:4).
For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance will arise for the Jews from another place and you and your father's house will perish. And who knows whether you have not attained royalty for such a time as this? (Esther 4:14)

6. College Education, Student Loans

-- Pray that people would consider viable alternatives for their education.
-- Pray that Congress would not encourage people to go into debt.
Owe nothing to anyone except to love one another; for he who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law (Romans 13:8).

7. Energy Independence

-- Pray that the United States will find and use more home-grown sources of energy.
The energetic prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much (James 5:16).
Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us, to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen (Ephesians 3:20-21).

8. Retirement

The new Congress is scheduled to address two issues related to retirement: Social Security and Medicare.

-- Pray for wisdom for our leaders.
-- Pray that America elects godly leaders in the years to come.
-- Pray that our leaders would honor God as they make those ethical, philosophical, moral, and life-and- death decisions.
It is better to take refuge in the LORD Than to trust in princes (Psalm 118:9).
